Definition:
Patterns of romantic and sexual attraction are independent of gender identity and neurobiological sex differentiation. Sexual and romantic orientation exist on multiple spectrums and do not predict or determine any of the other axes.
Key Insight:
Sexual orientation, romantic orientation, biological sex, and gender identity are independent variables of human diversity. Knowing one does not allow reliable prediction of the others.

Why It Matters:
Understanding sexual and romantic orientation as independent from biological sex, neurobiological sex, and gender identity helps explain why people of any gender identity may have any sexual or romantic orientation. Recognizing these as separate and independent variables reduces misconceptions, avoid stereotyping, and reflects the diversity observed across both transgender and cisgender populations.
Scientific Foundations:
LeVay, (1991) — INAH-3 differences and male sexual orientation
Demonstrated that the INAH-3 nucleus of the hypothalamus differed in size between heterosexual and homosexual men, providing early evidence that sexual orientation is associated with measurable differences in brain anatomy rather than being solely a product of social or environmental influences.
Savic & Lindström, (2008) — PET and MRI show differences in cerebral asymmetry and functional connectivity between homo- and heterosexual subjects.
Used PET and MRI to demonstrate that homosexual and heterosexual individuals differ in patterns of cerebral asymmetry and amygdala connectivity. The findings support a neurobiological basis for sexual orientation and indicate that these brain differences are established independently of gender identity.
Charles E. Roselli (2018) — Neurobiology of Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation
Reviewed evidence from genetics, prenatal hormones, brain development, and neuroanatomy, concluding that gender identity and sexual orientation are independent variables of human sexuality that both have significant biological contributions while remaining distinct characteristics.
